Tools & Tool Refinishing

Your tools don't get used very often.

It's true! Even if you're in your shop every day, you don't use each and every one of your tools all the time, do you? They spend a large percentage of the time collecting sawdust, hanging on a pegboard.

I believe that your tools should do more than their intended function; they should inspire you. They should have beautiful lines that beg to be held, and the tool be put to function. They should call to you, asking you to please put them in your hand and just use them.

Tool makers of old believed this. They made planes, squares, and saws with just a touch more style than really necessary for the tool's function.

I make tools for woodworkers that do just that, plus they're comfortable and fit like a tailored glove. The saw handles are made of solid oak, with particular attention taken to the direction of the grain so it doesn't split from regular use, and the saw blades are of the highest quality.

I also offer a limited tool refinishing service. This is not a restoration service; this is a refinishing service. What I do will render a tool useful again, but it will destroy any antique value it holds. In all three galleries shown here, I have refinished a different antique tool to functional or decorative use, but none of them hold any antique value.

The galleries for this service I have here are to show the quality of work I perform on these tools. I completely disassemble the tool, strip off any existing paint, rust, etc, put a new coat of paint on it (typically a hard enamel), sharpen and hone any blades as necessary, and reassemble the tool. If there are any wood pieces, such as on the Stanley Handyman plane, I will sand it down, stain it, and finish it. If there are any missing pieces, I will try to track them down, and the cost of the part will be reflected in the final cost of the refinishing.

To have this service done, please contact me directly, as I will not have this service available as a standard product on Etsy.
